Are Mini-Splits Cheaper to Run Than Central AC? It Depends What You Compare

Per square foot cooled, a modern mini-split is usually the most efficient equipment you can buy. Whether it is cheaper to run than your central system depends on what you are asking it to do.

Why they are efficient

Three reasons. There is no ductwork, and in a Florida attic ducts can lose 20–30% of the cooling before it reaches the room. The compressors are inverter-driven, so they run at a low, steady speed instead of cycling on and off. And you cool only the zone you are using instead of the whole house.

Where the savings are real

A bonus room, garage or lanai that you currently cool by running the whole central system harder, or by leaving a portable unit going, is where a mini-split pays back quickly. Cooling one 400 sq ft room with a 12,000 BTU head costs a fraction of what the 4-ton central system spends to drag that room down two degrees.

Where they are not

If you are comparing a five-head multi-zone system to a new high-efficiency central heat pump for the same 2,500 sq ft home, the operating cost difference is small and the mini-split install usually costs more. The central system also handles humidity across the whole house more evenly, which matters more here than the SEER number.

What to look at instead of the ad

SEER2 rating on the specific equipment, not the brand’s best model. Whether the space has ductwork already. How many hours a day the zone is actually occupied. And whether your central system is oversized — the most common reason a Nocatee or St. Johns home is humid and expensive to cool at the same time.
