Some AC problems have a quick fix you can handle yourself. If not, we’ll help you understand what’s wrong, what our technician will check, and what the repair will cost before any work begins.

AC is blowing warm air

What it usually means

Usually a thermostat setting, a clogged filter, a tripped breaker, or a part in the outdoor unit that has stopped working, such as a capacitor or contactor. Less often, low refrigerant from a leak.

Check these first

  1. Set the thermostat to Cool, the fan to Auto, and the temperature a few degrees below the room. A blank or dim screen usually means new batteries.
  2. Pull out the air filter. If it’s gray and clogged, replace it. A blocked filter can freeze the coil and stop cooling.
  3. Go outside while the system is calling for cool. Is the fan on top of the outdoor unit spinning? If not, check its breaker in your electrical panel and reset it once.
  4. Look for ice on the copper line at the outdoor unit. If you see any, switch the system Off and the fan to On to let it thaw. Don’t chip at the ice.

Call us if

  • The outdoor unit hums or clicks but the fan doesn’t spin

AC won’t turn on

What it usually means

Most often power: thermostat batteries, a tripped breaker or a switch that was turned off. Many systems also shut themselves off on purpose when the condensate drain backs up, to keep water from overflowing.

Check these first

  1. Check the thermostat has power and is set to Cool with the temperature below the room. Replace the batteries if the screen is blank.
  2. Check the breakers. The indoor unit and the outdoor unit usually have separate breakers. Reset a tripped one once.
  3. Find the service switch near the indoor unit (it looks like a light switch) and make sure it’s on. Check the unit’s access panel is fully closed; a safety switch keeps it off when the panel is loose.
  4. Look in the drain pan under the indoor unit. Standing water there can trip a float switch that shuts the AC off (see “Leaking water” below).

AC is leaking water

What it usually means

In Florida’s humidity your AC pulls gallons of water out of the air every day. A leak almost always means that water can’t drain: a clogged condensate line, a cracked drain pan, or a frozen coil melting.

Check these first

  1. Turn the system Off at the thermostat to stop more water, then soak up what’s there and protect floors or ceilings below.
  2. Replace the air filter if it’s dirty. A clogged filter can freeze the coil, and the melting ice overflows the pan.
  3. Find where the drain line ends outside (usually a small PVC pipe near the outdoor unit). If it isn’t dripping while the AC runs, it’s probably clogged. A wet/dry vacuum on that end can pull the clog out.
  4. Many drain lines have a capped T-fitting near the indoor unit. If yours does, a cup of distilled white vinegar poured in can clear light algae build-up. Not sure where it is? Skip this step.

AC is making unusual noises

What it usually means

The sound usually points to the cause: buzzing or humming with the outdoor fan not spinning often means a failed capacitor or contactor. Squealing points to a motor. Banging or clanking means something loose or broken. Rattling is often a loose panel or debris. Hissing or bubbling can mean a refrigerant leak.

Check these first

  1. If it’s grinding, banging, or humming with the fan stopped, turn the system Off at the thermostat. Running it that way can damage the compressor, the most expensive part.
  2. Look at the outdoor unit for sticks, leaves or anything touching it, and keep about 2 feet clear around it. Clear debris from the outside only.
  3. Check the access panels on both units are screwed down; a loose panel is a common rattle.
  4. A single click when the system starts or stops is normal. Repeated clicking with no start is not.
