Thinking about switching to tankless?
A tankless water heater heats water only when you turn on a tap, so it doesn’t run out and doesn’t keep a tank of water hot all day. It mounts on the wall, which frees up floor space in a garage or utility closet. Whether it’s a good fit depends on how much hot water your household uses at once, your gas or electrical service, and where the unit and its venting can go.
What to consider before upgrading
- Sizing. Tankless units are sized by flow rate (gallons per minute): how many showers, faucets and appliances run at the same time. An undersized unit runs lukewarm when two showers are on.
- Gas or electric service. Gas units often need a larger gas line. Electric units can need a dedicated circuit and more capacity than your electrical panel has to spare.
- Venting and location. Gas models need proper venting to the outside, and some need a condensate drain, so where the unit can be mounted matters.
- Upfront cost vs. running cost. Tankless usually costs more to install than a tank replacement, but it uses less energy and, with yearly maintenance, lasts longer than a tank.
