How it works

Where filtration and UV fit in your HVAC system

Cut-away of a typical HVAC air handler. Indoor air with particles enters through the air filter, which captures dust, pollen and other particles. A UV light above the cooling coil helps limit microbial growth on the coil, a common area for moisture buildup. The blower then sends cleaner air throughout the home.

Straight answers first

Filtration, UV or a purifier? Start here.

Choose an option for what it does, what it doesn’t do and how we help you decide. You don’t need to know the technology yourself.

High-efficiency filtration

Your HVAC filter catches particles as air returns to the system. A higher-efficiency filter captures smaller particles, but it has to match how much air your system can move through it.

What it helps with

  • Dust that settles soon after cleaning.
  • Pollen and pet dander circulating through the house.
  • Keeping the indoor coil and blower cleaner.

A filter that’s too restrictive for your system can reduce airflow and comfort. We’ll check what your system can handle.

How 365 can help

We’ll check your current filter, return and airflow, then recommend the most effective filtration your system can support.

How UV coil treatment works

A UV-C lamp installed inside the air handler shines on the cooling coil and drain pan. Those surfaces stay damp while the AC runs, which makes them a common place for mold and bacteria to grow.

What it can help with

  • Limiting microbial growth on the coil and drain pan.
  • Musty smells that start at the air handler.
  • Keeping the coil cleaner between maintenance visits.

What it doesn’t do

  • It doesn’t replace your air filter.
  • It doesn’t fix humidity or moisture problems at the source.
  • UV lamps lose strength over time and need periodic replacement.

How 365 can help

We’ll look at your coil, drain pan and humidity, and tell you honestly whether UV treatment makes sense for your system.

Whole-home air purification

Whole-home air purifiers install in your ductwork and work with your HVAC system, so air is treated whenever the system runs. Different technologies target different things, so the right choice depends on what you want to reduce.

Your options

  • Whole-home air purifiers install in the ductwork and treat air throughout the house.
  • Portable air purifiers clean the air in a single room, like a bedroom or office.

Ask what each system is designed to reduce, and whether it has been tested for it.

How 365 can help

We’ll ask what’s bothering you, look at your system and compare the options that fit your home and budget.

Choosing the right option

Help deciding what makes sense for your home.

What’s the difference between a HEPA filter and a UV air purifier?

A HEPA filter traps airborne particles like dust, pollen, and pet dander, while a UV air purifier installation neutralizes bacteria, mold, and viruses using ultraviolet light. For comprehensive air purification, many homeowners choose a system that combines both technologies.

Do air purifiers really help with allergies?

Yes, air purifiers can significantly reduce allergens in your home by capturing dust, pollen, pet dander, and mold spores. A whole house air purifier installation works with your HVAC system to remove airborne contaminants throughout your entire home, improving indoor air quality for allergy sufferers. HEPA filters and activated carbon filters are especially effective at trapping allergens and odors, while UV light air purifiers neutralize bacteria and viruses.

What are the benefits of installing a UV air purifier?

A UV air purifier installation helps eliminate airborne bacteria, mold spores, and viruses that can circulate through your home's HVAC system. Unlike traditional air filters, which only trap particles, UV air purifiers use ultraviolet light to destroy harmful microorganisms at the molecular level. This makes them a great addition to homes where respiratory health is a priority. If you're looking to install a UV air purifier, our experts can provide proper placement and compatibility with your HVAC system.

How does a whole-house air purifier work?

A whole-house air purifier installation integrates directly with your HVAC system to filter and clean the air circulating throughout your home. These systems remove dust, allergens, and pollutants before they enter your living space, providing continuous indoor air purification. Compared to portable units, whole-house purifiers are more efficient, require less maintenance, and cover a larger area, making them a great investment for long-term air quality improvement.

Do UV air purifiers eliminate odors?

While UV air purifiers are primarily designed to kill airborne bacteria, mold, and viruses, they can also help reduce odors caused by biological contaminants. However, for comprehensive odor removal, a system that combines UV air purifier services with an activated carbon filter is recommended. This combination neutralizes both airborne pathogens and common household odors like pet smells, cooking fumes, and smoke.

How often should I service my air purifier?

Regular air purifier service is essential for best performance. Most air purifiers require filter changes every 6-12 months, while UV bulbs in UV air purifiers should be replaced annually. Our team offers comprehensive air purifier services to inspect, clean, and replace essential components, keeping your system running efficiently.

Are UV air purifiers safe to use in my home?

Yes, UV air purifiers are safe when professionally installed and maintained. The UV light is enclosed within the unit, preventing direct exposure to occupants while effectively killing airborne contaminants. If you're considering adding one to your home, our team can install a UV air purifier safely and efficiently.

Can I install an air purifier myself, or should I hire a professional?

While some portable air purifiers are plug-and-play, a whole-house air purifier installation requires professional expertise. Improper installation can reduce efficiency and compromise air quality. Our technicians check for proper sizing, placement, and integration with your HVAC system for maximum effectiveness.

Do air purifiers help with mold prevention?

Yes, UV air purifiers can prevent mold growth by destroying mold spores before they have a chance to spread. This is especially useful in humid climates where mold can be a persistent issue. Pairing a UV purifier with a dehumidifier can further reduce mold risks.

Can an air purifier improve my HVAC system’s efficiency?

Yes, a properly maintained air purifier reduces dust buildup in your HVAC system, helping it run more efficiently and extending its lifespan. With regular air purifier services, your filters and UV bulbs will function better, preventing strain on your heating and cooling system.
