Know the signs

Repair or replace: what to look for

Signs you might consider a repair

In many cases, a repair can get your system running well again, especially if the issue is minor and your system is relatively new.

  • Your system is 10 years old or newer
  • The repair is minor and affordable
  • Your energy bills are still reasonable
  • Your home stays comfortable
  • This is the first or second major issue

Signs you might consider a replacement

Sometimes a new, energy-efficient system is the smarter long-term investment, especially if your unit is aging or needs frequent repairs.

  • Your system is more than 10 years old
  • You’ve had frequent or costly repairs
  • Your energy bills are steadily increasing
  • Your home has uneven temperatures or poor humidity control
  • Your system uses R-22, a refrigerant no longer made
  • Repairs will cost 50% or more of a new system

Repair vs. replace: the numbers that matter

How the key factors compare, and what they mean for you as a homeowner.

System age1–5 yearsOver 10 yearsOlder systems are more likely to fail and cost more to run.
Repair cost vs. replacementLess than 30%30–50% or moreA big repair on an old system often doesn’t pay back.
SEER2 / efficiencyEfficient for its ageBelow today’s 14.3 SEER2 minimumA newer system can noticeably lower cooling costs in our long season.
Refrigerant typeNewer refrigerant (R-454B or R-32)R-22 (no longer made) or R-410A (still serviced)R-22 refills are scarce and costly. R-410A systems can still be serviced, but new equipment has moved to newer refrigerants.

Florida and coastal factors to know

Our climate is tough on AC systems. Here’s what to keep in mind.

Salt air shortens equipment life

Coils and fins corrode faster near the coast, from Ponte Vedra to the Beaches. Rinsing and coatings help.

Long cooling seasons add wear

Systems here run about nine months a year, so they age faster and efficiency matters more.

Humidity control matters

Comfort isn’t just temperature. An oversized system cools fast but leaves the air damp.

Attics, ducts and thermostats

Attic heat, duct leakage and thermostat placement all affect sizing and comfort. We check them first.

How to choose the right replacement system

Use this checklist to get the best value, comfort and performance.

  1. 1
A real load calculation, not a rule of thumbA Manual J calculation sizes the system to your house, windows and insulation.
  2. 2
Match the system to your home and ductworkIndoor and outdoor units should be matched, and ducts checked before anything is installed.
  3. 3
Compare efficiency without overspendingLook at SEER2 and total cost of ownership, not just the lowest price.
  4. 4
Ask about warranty and labor coverageKnow what is covered, for how long, and who handles it. We are Amana and Rheem dealers.
  5. 5
Consider air quality and humidityFiltration, UV lights and dehumidification can be added while the system is open.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to what homeowners ask us most.

How long does a central AC system last in Florida?

Usually 10 to 15 years. Our long cooling season works systems harder than in most of the country, and homes near the coast can see shorter lifespans from salt air. Twice-a-year maintenance is the single best way to reach the high end of that range.

Is it better to replace the indoor and outdoor units together?

In most cases, yes. A matched system is what the efficiency rating and manufacturer warranty are based on, and a new outdoor unit paired with an old air handler can underperform. If your indoor unit is newer and compatible, we will tell you.

What is SEER2, and should I pay for a higher rating?

SEER2 is the current federal efficiency rating, in use since 2023. Higher numbers use less electricity. Because Florida systems run so many hours a year, higher-efficiency equipment pays back faster here than up north. We will show you the payback math for your house so you can decide.

What if my AC uses R-22 or R-410A refrigerant?

R-22 production ended in 2020, so what remains is expensive, and a refrigerant leak or compressor failure on an R-22 system usually points toward replacement. R-410A systems can still be serviced and recharged. R-410A is being phased down and new systems made since 2025 use newer refrigerants, so it is one factor to weigh along with age, condition, warranty and repair cost, not a reason to replace on its own.

Will a new system lower my electric bill?

Usually, if your current system is much older or less efficient and the new one is sized correctly with sound ductwork. We will estimate the difference before you commit, rather than promise a number.

Should I replace my AC before it fails completely?

If your system is more than 10 years old, uses R-22, or needs repairs every year, planning ahead lets you compare options calmly instead of in an emergency in July. If it is running well, there is no need to replace it early.
