Is Hydro-Jetting Safe for Your Pipes? When We Use It and When We Don’t

Hydro-jetting is safe for a sound pipe and the wrong choice for a damaged one. That is why we run a camera through the line before we jet it, every time.

What hydro-jetting is

A hydro-jetter pushes water through a hose at 1,500 to 4,000 psi with a nozzle that sprays backward and forward. The backward jets pull the hose through the pipe; the forward jet cuts the blockage. Unlike a cable, which punches a hole through a clog, jetting scours the full circumference of the pipe wall — grease, scale, sludge, soap, roots.

When it is the right tool

Kitchen drain lines with years of grease. Main sewer lines with root intrusion, after the roots are cut. Restaurant and light-commercial lines. Any drain that has been snaked more than twice and keeps clogging. Lines in newer PVC-plumbed homes across Nocatee, St. Johns and Durbin Crossing are ideal candidates; PVC handles jetting well.

When we say no

Old cast iron that is already scaling or has thin walls — common in St. Augustine, San Marco, Riverside and older Beaches homes — can be opened up by a jetter. Orangeburg pipe (a tar-paper product used into the 1970s) will collapse. A line with a belly, an offset joint or a crack needs repair, not cleaning. The camera inspection tells us which situation we are in before any water goes down the pipe. If a company offers to jet your line without looking at it first, ask why.

Jetting vs. snaking

A cable is faster and cheaper for a one-time clog, a hair blockage in a bathroom line or a toilet paper backup. Jetting costs more, takes longer and leaves the pipe clean. If you are clearing the same line every few months, jetting once usually ends the cycle.

What to expect on the job

We locate a cleanout, run the camera, show you what is in the line, and give you a written price. Jetting a residential main line typically takes an hour or two. We run the camera again afterward so you can see the clean pipe.
